Becoming a mermaid isn’t that hard to do. It takes just a few steps.
3. Accessorize accordingly!
Getting a tail and swimming in it are the basic tenants of being a mermaid, but you can’t neglect the accessories if you want to feel like a real mermaid! One accessory that will help to complete your mermaid look is a hair clip.
There are many places to buy nice ones, but if you want to save money you can just make one yourself! It’s so simple that anyone can do it! I will show you the steps to creating your own custom mermaid hair clip that incorporates seaweed, shells, pearls, and fishnet. You’ll look like you just emerged from the sea in style!
I make these types of hairpieces and sell them in my Etsy shop, so if you’d rather just buy one check out my shop!
What you’ll need:
· Metal clip
· Seashell
· Fishnet
· Pearls
· Plastic seaweed
· Hot glue gun
· E6000 glue
The great thing about this is that it’s all up to you how you create it! You can go without some of the elements that I used or add some extra materials. Get creative and do what you think looks best.
Step 1
First gather the materials you wish to use and lay them out to see how you want the clip to look. I used several different types of fake seaweed for the clip in the pictures. You can buy fake seaweed at a craft store, but there are many more options if you look at the aquarium section of a pet store.
Step 2
Glue the seaweed and fishnet to the inside of the shell. Use a lot of hot glue to secure it properly. Let sit for a minute or two so the glue can dry completely. I layered the seaweed to be on top of the fishnet because I thought that looked best. I also included a strand of pearls, but you don’t have to use any if you can’t find any.
*I got the pearls at a thrift store. Thrift stores are a good place to find some of the materials. They usually have a craft section and I’ve often found packets of seashells for sale there.
Step 3
On the front of the shell I glued on some smaller shells. You can glue on pearls, shells, beads, crystals, or anything else you want.
Step 4
I used E6000 glue to add some extra sturdiness. E6000 is a super strong glue, but it also creates an odor and some toxic fumes, so it’s good to open a window while using it, and using a mask helps.
Step 5
Glue the metal clip onto the piece. I use something to open the clip a little so the two parts of it don’t get glued together, which would make it unusable. You don’t want to have to take off the clip and use a new one.
Let it dry for about an hour and then you can put it on and feel fabulous and magical!
