Mermaid Fitness: How To Get In Shape With Mermaid Workouts

Updated: Feb 22

I want to begin this article by saying that mermaids come in all shapes and sizes! You don't need to be skinny to be a mermaid. When I say "in shape" I don't mean being skinny, but more so being in good health and being able to stay active. Both are very important when it comes to swimming in a mermaid tail.

I've been mermaiding for about 10 years now, and I've found it to be an incredible workout. It's actually crazy how many calories you can burn from swimming in a mermaid tail. It's estimated that swimming with a mermaid tail can burn anywhere from 300 to 500 calories per hour. It's good exercise, but it's also a fun and magical activity to do with friends!

In this article I'll be discussing mermaid fitness, including what it is, what its benefits are, and how to get started!

What is Mermaid Fitness?

Mermaid fitness is a type of workout that incorporates a mermaid tail into your exercise routine. This type of workout can include a variety of activities, such as swimming drills, yoga poses, and resistance training exercises using a mermaid tail.

One of the main benefits of mermaid fitness is that it allows you to exercise in a low-impact, high-resistance environment. Swimming and moving in a mermaid tail requires the use of your core muscles, back, legs, and arms, which can help to tone and strengthen your entire body.

Mermaid Fitness Benefits

Aside from the obvious benefit of getting a great workout, mermaid fitness also offers a number of other benefits, including:

  1. Improved cardiovascular health: Swimming is a great way to get your heart rate up and improve your cardiovascular health.

  2. Low-impact exercise: Mermaid fitness is a low-impact workout, which means that it is less stressful on your joints and muscles than other types of exercise, such as running or weightlifting.

  3. Increased flexibility: Many mermaid workouts incorporate yoga poses and stretches, which can help to improve your flexibility and range of motion.

  4. Better balance and coordination: Swimming in a mermaid tail requires a lot of balance and coordination, which can help to improve these skills over time.

  5. A fun and unique workout experience: Mermaid fitness is a fun and unique way to get in shape and stay active. It can be a great way to mix up your regular workout routine and try something new.

  6. Good for your mental health: Mermaiding is a fun activity that releases endorphins from the exercise, plus the magical and imaginative nature of it. I always feel increased confidence in a mermaid tail and it brings me great joy to be a mermaid.

Getting Started with Mermaid Fitness

If you’re interested in trying mermaid fitness, here are a few tips for getting started:

  1. Invest in a high-quality mermaid tail: A high-quality mermaid tail is essential for a safe and effective workout. Look for tails made from durable materials that fit snugly but comfortably. A good monofin is the most important part. Buy from a trusted brand such as Finis, Finfun, Mahina Mermaid, or Mermaid Linden.

  2. Start slow: If you’re new to mermaid fitness, it’s important to start slow and gradually increase the intensity and duration of your workouts over time.

  3. Take a class or work with a trainer: Taking a mermaid fitness class or working with a trainer can help you to learn proper technique and form, as well as give you a chance to connect with other mermaid enthusiasts. Padi now offers a mermaid certification.

  4. Mix it up: Mermaid fitness can include a variety of activities, so don’t be afraid to mix it up and try different types of workouts to keep things interesting. You could do a floor workout in a tail, swim in a tail, do yoga in a tail, do mermaid dances, or whatever you can think of!
