Why to Switch to Reusable Straws

Updated: Dec 4, 2020

You’ve likely seen the horrible, gut-wrenching photos of a sea turtle with a plastic straw stuck in its nose. It's so sad. There’s also the video that goes along with it, featuring the heart-warming rescue. It’s wonderful that there are caring humans out there helping to save these animals, but we need to keep working towards solutions and preventative measures, so no turtle, or any other animal, ever has to suffer again.

Plastic straws are just one man-made object that wreak havoc on the environment. They are one of the most found items picked up during cleanups. They’re non-recyclable and non-biodegradable and can remain in the environment for about 200 years. It is estimated that around 500 million straws are used daily! Think of all the damage that is being done!

Some companies are doing their part in this fight by eliminating straws or switching to cardboard straws. It feels good to be environmentally friendly, but let’s face it, cardboard straws suck (pun intended). They get soggy way too quickly and no one enjoys that…

There’s another option, though: Reusable straws. Many brands are emerging with their own reusable straw. They’re made out of metal, silicone, bamboo, or glass, and can be found in many fun colors and sizes.

Mermaid Straw is one amazing brand that is set on helping make Earth a cleaner place. Their straws are made from food grade stainless steel to ensure your safety. A starter pack comes with two colorful straws, one mimicking a bendy straw and the other is straight. You also get a little pouch and some thin cleaning brushes. You get all that for $12. If you don’t like the feel of metal, then you can buy little silicone tips for your straws, perfect for those of us who chew on our straws. There are many different sizes of straw you can get for whatever beverage you are drinking, including a fatter straw for thick smoothies. They even sell reusable bottles and tumblers for your beverages.

The founders are a nature-loving couple whose hearts are set on raising awareness for environmental conservation. They are part of One Percent for the Planet, a movement that encourages businesses to make more eco friendly choices.

There are many similar brands, and they generally all come with cleaning brushes and some kind of travel pouch or container, and often have the option for silicone tips.

For even more convenience, Final Co came out with a collapsible straw called FinalStraw! They are another awesome brand passionate about the environment. They make a great product, but they also donate 10% of their revenue to non-profit organizations that help protect the environment and animals. The FinalStraw folds up for easy portability, with a little case made of recycled materials. The case can be attached to a key chain so you can bring it wherever you go without forgetting it! Their straw goes for $25. A little pricey, but worth it. It is durable and long lasting and will make a huge impact on the environment.

Many people enjoy a soft drink using a straw every day. That’s at least 365 straws a year just from ONE person. Straws end up in the sea more often than not. Now imagine if they all switched to using a reusable straw. That would have a huge positive impact on the environment. This is the only planet we have to live on and if we don’t all do our part in protecting it then we will lose it to pollution and climate change. We must act now! Make the one-time investment on a reusable straw and you’ll feel great about yourself and the earth will smile on you.
